Roof Material Delivery: Driveway Access and Staging Questions

Confirm the delivery location, vehicle access and handoff contact before roofing materials arrive. A driveway that fits your car is not automatically suitable for a delivery vehicle or a concentrated material load. Let the supplier and contractor determine the equipment and loading plan; do not estimate capacity from appearance.

Send a useful access description

Give the contractor photographs showing the approach, gate, overhead obstructions and intended unloading area. Mention a steep entrance, narrow turn, recently installed paving, an underlying structure or anything else you know about the surface. Ask whether a site visit is needed.

The useful questions are operational:

  • Who chooses and approves the unloading location?
  • What space must remain clear, and by what time?
  • Will vehicles need access to the garage after unloading?
  • Who can authorize a changed location if the original area is unavailable?
  • Who checks the delivery against the order?

Make the handoff explicit

Suppose the delivery arrives while the household contact is away and the intended area contains a parked vehicle. The plan should say whom the driver calls. “Leave it wherever it fits” risks blocking an exit or placing materials somewhere never assessed.

Ask for a delivery window rather than relying on the installation date. Confirm whether a missed delivery or weather change alters the parking arrangement. Do not stand beside moving equipment to guide the driver; use the contractor’s agreed communication process.

Check the order without handling the load

Request readable delivery information: product name, color and quantity, plus how shortages or substitutions will be reported. Do not climb onto a truck or roof to inspect bundles. Record visible delivery damage from a safe location and ask the supplier to address it.

A written order matters: TDI recommends written bids identifying the contractor. Delivery arrangements are a useful project-specific addition, not something to leave implied. TDI contractor guidance

Discuss access with the contractor preparing your replacement scope; the household’s parking needs and the supplier’s unloading needs should be resolved together.
