What Class 3 and Class 4 actually mean

Class 3 and Class 4 are laboratory impact-resistance classifications. Under UL 2218, the test uses steel balls dropped onto the roofing material: Class 3 uses a 1.75-inch ball and Class 4 uses a 2-inch ball at the specified test heights. These are test conditions, not a guarantee that a roof will withstand natural hail of that size.

Real storms vary. Roof age, installation, the full roof assembly and the impact itself affect damage. UL notes that the UL 2218 evaluation does not account for every type of visible damage, including denting or granule loss. No shingle is hail-proof.

Compare the exact roofing product

Check the current technical sheet for the product, manufacturing version and market you are considering. A brand or product family does not establish the rating of every shingle it sells. Compare the impact rating alongside wind and fire ratings, installation requirements, warranty terms, appearance and the complete quoted scope.

What should a homeowner weigh?

  • Budget: compare written installed quotes for the same roof and scope.
  • Impact performance: review the test standard and current product results.
  • Warranty: read coverage, exclusions, installation requirements and registration terms.
  • Insurance: ask whether the exact product qualifies for a premium discount and what records are required.

An impact rating does not guarantee a discount, an insurance payment or a damage-free roof.
