Roof Drain Strainers: Debris Control Without Blocking Flow
A roof drain strainer needs to be evaluated as part of the drain assembly. A missing dome, a displaced cover or debris surrounding the drain deserves attention, but installing any cover that fits is not a reliable replacement specification.
Separate the cover from the drainage problem
The Watts RD-200 product description identifies a self-locking dome as a specified component. Use the same level of identification for your building: manufacturer, drain model and approved replacement part, rather than an approximate diameter alone.
A technician's report should distinguish the strainer's condition from the condition of the surrounding roof and the drain's ability to carry water away. A clean-looking dome is not a capacity assessment of the pipe below it.
Request a useful maintenance entry
| Report field | What it should tell the owner |
|---|---|
| Drain ID | Which drain was inspected, with a location photograph |
| Strainer condition | Present, secured, displaced, damaged or unidentified |
| Surroundings | What material was found nearby and where it appears to originate |
| Work completed | Cleaning, approved replacement, or further investigation needed |
| Follow-up | Responsible contractor and an agreed next action |
JM's roof maintenance checklist includes debris removal and secure strainers. Set your building's maintenance arrangements around its actual system and access conditions.
Use repeat findings to improve the plan
If reports repeatedly show the same material at the same drain, ask what changed nearby: landscaping, rooftop work, equipment servicing or debris storage. Record the answer. Repeated cleaning without recording the source makes it difficult to know whether the maintenance plan is working.
Do not remove a strainer or add improvised mesh to “improve” drainage. Have the drainage professional evaluate the specified component and any blockage. Building occupants should report concerns from safe ground or interior locations.
For membrane damage beside a drain, include the maintenance entry with your commercial roofing repair request, so the roofing and drainage scopes can be coordinated.
